My name is Joey Frye and I am an artist from Virginia. I am writing this to tell about my business ARTism by Joey and I hope to make you an ARTism by Joey fan.
I have Asperger’s Syndrome.
Some people say “oh, that’s too bad” but it isn’t bad at all!
Some things are harder for me than they are for other people but being an Aspy is my gift and my tool. Without it, there wouldn’t be any ARTism by Joey and the great art I make for people.
ART brings people lots of joy and sometimes they even cry when they receive a picture from me, the happy crying kind, though.
Let me tell you how it started.
I couldn’t really talk before I was four years old, but I could draw and I drew a lot.
I really liked trains, dinosaurs, animals, and movies and one of the first things I did was I made creatures from compound words… I think of things really literally, so when you say something like “Crabcake” or “Shrimp Cocktail”, I think of this…
I did really well in school (except math, I don’t like or understand math at all!). Then, in late 2015, I had kind of a bad time.
I got really sick and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
While I was getting better, I was a little bit down, depressed, and unsure what to do. My mom said, “Hey, Joey, what do you think about starting your own art business? Your art brings people joy, you are really good at it, and nobody can do what you do. You have a gift.”
I thought I loved that idea so I did it!
My first picture was for a lady who likes yoga is a yoga teacher. People give me the randomest things then I make a visual story out of them. I made a concert hall, and the piano legs where each yoga animal poses and an elephant played the piano.
Since then I have done more than 100 commissioned pieces for people.
They give me different things they love like hobbies or places or music or people and then I put it all together for one of kind gift or remembrance. It is usually a happy picture but sometimes people want to remember someone who has died and I try to make that a nice memory for them.
In 2017, a regional newspaper did a front page article about me and I was nervous! It was really nice.
Then the Associated Press saw it and printed it all over the United States!
I started getting all kinds of commission work from everywhere from Arkansas to Arizona and it was a great big deal. I also got recognized at the Virginia House of Delegates for being a young entrepreneur and using my gifts.
I have also done motivational speeches, was on a YouTube show called “Autism Live”.
Those things make me nervous, too, but it is fun and I nail it every time!
I’m also an Ambassador for a non-profit group called Heroes 4 Autism. It raises awareness about autism for first responders and police.
It is a really great group and I hope to do some art for them. They are based in Las Vegas and I hope to go there sometime. I even made a great picture for a hotel there called the Flamingo, because that looks like a great place to have fun and I love animals. It is called “Feathered Fun at the Flamingo” (16×20”, acrylic on canvas). I have never been there but maybe sometime!
Someday maybe I can even work in the entertainment industry with Disney or other great opportunities.
Thank you for reading about my work and how I started ARTism by Joey. I hope you give me an opportunity to do “Magical Art for You and other Awesome People”.
